All About Orthodontics

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontic treatment can improve the alignment of the teeth creating a pleasing smile and proper bite. Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age and is often recommended by your general dentist during your routine cleaning and exams.

How Orthodontic Treatment Works?

Orthodontic appliances can be made of metal, ceramic, or plastic. The appliance may be removable or consist of brackets bonded (glued) to the teeth. A wire is placed into the bracket and usually held in position by a tiny rubber band. The wire places a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, slowly moving the teeth into a corrected position.

Duration of Treatment

Treatment time typically ranges from one to three years, depending on the growth of the patient’s mouth and face and the severity of the problem. Patients grow at different rates and will respond differently to orthodontic treatment, so case completion time may vary from patient to patient. Patient compliance is also an important factor in achieving the most effective treatment. This includes regular orthodontic visits, consistent brushing and flossing, avoiding broken appliances with prompt repair of a broken bracket, and diligent use of any prescribed appliance (rubber bands, etc.) Interceptive, or early treatment procedures, may take as few as six months. Patients are typically seen in the office every four to eight weeks during active orthodontic treatment.
